EMT jobs are responsible for responding to the scene of medical emergencies like heart attacks, childbirths, gun shot wounds, and automobile accidents. Dispatched by a 911 operator they are apart of first response personnel at the scene of an emergency along with police and firefighters. EMTs work in teams that provide immediate medical care to victims and while transporting their patients to hospitals. An emergency medical technician employed by fire departments work about 50 hours a week while those employed by hospitals work between 45 and 60 hours a week.
A high school diploma is required to enter formal EMT paramedic training. There are three different levels of training: EMT- basic, EMT- Intermediate, and EMT- Paramedic. Focusing on emergency skills, the basic level informs how to manage respiratory, patient assessments, trauma, and cardiac emergencies. The intermediate level training requirements vary in different States but typically require 30 to 350 hours of training. The highest level of training is an EMT paramedic. They learn advanced medical skills over a 1 to 2 year period and may receive an associate's degree. All 50 states require certification for each of the EMT training levels, while some states also require registration with the NREMT.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a projected increase in the rate of employment by 19 percent between 2006 and 2016. This rate will be faster than average for all occupations and be due to the increasing amount of elderly in the population. Additional prospects for EMT jobs will arise from the need to replace workers who transfer to other occupations or leave the workforce entirely.
