Phlebotomist jobs are those that draw blood from donors or patients in a variety of settings. Blood banks, hospitals, and other healthcare facilities all employ these workers to take samples for analysis or other medical purposes. Responsible for preparing equipment used in the blood drawing process like needles, containers, blood collection instruments, and gauze, cotton, phlebotomists also handle simple administrative and clerical tasks with verifying patient information and records. The hours worked typically involve day, night, and evening shifts.

A certificate program, an associate degree, or a bachelor's degree will be sufficient education for phlebotomist careers. Bachelor's degree programs involve courses in biological sciences, microbiology, chemistry, mathematics, statistics, as well as specialized courses for clinical laboratory skills. The National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredits about 470 programs that can lead to clinical laboratory technologists. The NAACLS also recognizes 60 phlebotomy and clinical assisting programs. Licensing requirements varies depending on the State but generally they require a bachelor's degree and passing on an examination.

In 2006, there were 319,000 clinical laboratory technologists and technicians, which were employed mostly in hospitals. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is a projected increase to occur of 14 percent during 2006 to 2016. This rate will be faster than the national average of employment for all occupations with the demand created from the increase in the elderly population and population growth as a whole. Phlebotomist jobs are expected to be available because of the number of job opportunities exceeding the number of job seekers.
